Esmeralda¹

Down from the glen came the marching men,
with their shields and their swords,
to fight the fight they believed to be right,

To the town where there was plenty,

When they left the town it was empty.

  1. Irlanda se conoce como la Isla Esmeralda, por el verde manto vegetal que la cubre.

  2. Probablemente, esta canción se inspira en los tristes episodios de la historia de Irlanda que acaecieron durante la invasión inglesa llevada a cabo en el s. XVII por Oliver Cromwell, como el Asedio de Drogheda y el Saco de Wexford.
